Retirement

After 31 years of government service, my Dad is retiring this Friday.

The bulk of his career has been at the Pentagon in DC, although there were two years where he was stationed at an office in Omaha, Nebraska - which was where I was born in 1980. Lunch visits to the Pentagon were common adventures growing up. I remember typing stories on his computer at a young age, and thinking it was the coolest thing ever to watch the printer across the office magically make my words appear on a sheet of paper (complete with those dotted strips on the sides that you could tear off). I remember getting probably my first double cheeseburger ever in the outdoor dining tent in the middle of those five walls. And I remember Dad using the office Xerox machine to make several dozen stapled copies of the newsletter I used to create for my fifth grade class, the Filson Flyer.

So what about retirement plans? Among several ideas, there's traveling, guitar lessons, and home video editing. I can thank Dad for many things, but certainly one is my compulsive camera habits. Half of my waking life is seemingly documented in slides, 4x6 photos and hi-8 tapes: birthdays, vacations, piano recitals, soccer / baseball / basketball games, Okay Samurai concerts and much more. Here's hoping that Dad buys that Mac I've been trying to talk him into and edits together some epic iMovie productions.

So congratulations big guy. And if you need any help with the guitar or assembling YouTube movies, just let me know.

Robot Destruction

This was a fun little project: Joe Lucchese (aka Dope Pope) took a story and drawing from his childhood, and asked artists (myself included) to reinterpret it using their own styles (similar to the concept behind the Monster Engine). The diverse results can be seen at the Metal Man Project.

GDC 2007

Seeing video games from the technical side during this year's Game Developer's Conference was a pretty different experience than the player perspective I'm used to, but it was still a lot of fun. It made game development feel like less of a mysterious how-do-they-do-that process and more of a focused production from the talented people working behind the scenes. The bald guy in the glasses above is Tycho from Penny Arcade playing Super Paper Mario. I also saw game composer Tommy Tallarico from a distance (who wrote Visions, a song that Okay Samurai - when it was a band - modifed/added lyrics to waaaay back in the day and called Instant Oatmeal Road).

Ahn Nyung Ha Se Yo

Today brought a nice surprise in the mail: a four-page interview I did last month with a Korean design magazine called w.e.b. Pretty cool! I'm also excited to attend the Game Developer's Conference next week to check out what's on the horizon for the video game world. Expect photos and updates from there soon...
