Back on Solid Ground

"The news is flowing like mud over there at Okay Samurai," said my former instructor Chris Doherty last week while we were catching up in Atlanta. Luckily the busy travel month of June is dying down, so hopefully I'll be back on track soon.

The HOW Conference early last week in Atlanta was a great experience. My session, Self Promotion and Portfolios in the Digital Age, was on Monday afternoon. It started out with a couple of early self-promotion stories, including the time I ran (and lost) the race for student government president in elementary school, as well as some old Okay Samurai concert memories. I was a nervous wreck making last-minute changes in the morning, but seeing several familiar faces in the audience that afternoon helped things go a lot smoother - thanks Sam, John, Gillian, Mason, and everyone else who showed up. It was a great crowd, and I was happy with how the presentation went. Monday evening marked the AIGA SEED awards, where I was lucky to run into a few more old Atlanta friends, and Okaydave was lucky to win an interactive award. The HOW Conference was impressive overall, and I'm glad I was able to catch a few sessions and meet so many talented people. It was also great to return to Atlanta in general; Peachtree traffic hasn't changed much, but I did get a chance to quickly drop by Portfolio Center.

Before Atlanta, April and I enjoyed Cori's wedding in New York, which ended up with a beautiful reception at the Boathouse in Central Park (personal highlight: milk and cookies to compliment the wedding cake). The weekend before the wedding, we enjoyed our 5-year college reunion back at UVA in Charlottesville; it was good to catch up with old friends in familiar locations around grounds, and everyone seemed to be doing well. After Atlanta, my sister graduated from high school back in Fairfax VA, so it was nice to spend time with her and my family, of course including some celebratory Wii bowling and WarioWare competitions.

Good to be back in SF; we're moving offices this week so I'm excited to settle into the new place. It's only a few blocks away from our current office, and has some nice views - my windows (quite appropriately, I think) look down on a school's rooftop playground below. I wonder if we could fit a sandbox and slide in the new space too...

Photos from the past few weeks are here. Unfortunately, I was so preoccupied during HOW that I didn't take many shots in Atlanta; if anyone out there has something from last Monday's presentation, please let me know...
